The following diagram will demonstrate graphically the extensive inbreeding that has occurred with the lions in the Ngorongoro Crater, Tanzania. After 1962, no male lions from outside the Crater were successful in entering the Crater and taking over a pride and rearing cubs. This has consequently led to the significant inbreeding as discussed in the article "Lions In Ngorongoro Crater".
The following symbols mean:
1. f = female lion
2. m = male lion
3. numbers on the right and left refer to years, ie. "55" is 1955
4. numbers at the end of an arrow represent cubs born, ie. "3f" is 3 female cubs
5. a straight line down represents a lion pride that continues to survive over the years
6. dotted lines represents male lions taking over another pride and mating with those females
