Books: 'Into Africa', written by Craig Packer, published in 1994. An easy to read introduction regarding how a scientist and his students study lions in the Serengeti and chimpanzees in Gombe. Summarizes research results, plus provides a day-by-day account of tracking down lions in the wild. George Schaller, renowned field biologist and conservationist, began his field work in 1966, with the goal to study and understand the affect of lion predation on prey species in the Serengeti. This book summarizes his research during the three years he was in the Serengeti, and the research project he began in the Serengeti continues today. Mr. Schaller has also studied a number of endangered species including the mountain gorillas, tigers, pandas, and the snow leopard. Order a copy of "The Serengeti Lion" from amazon.com. 'Serengeti - Dynamics of an Ecosystem', edited by A.R.E. Sinclair and M. Norton-Griffiths, published in 1979. This book is a compilation of research papers on the Serengeti and Mara ecosystem from individual scientists during the 1970's. 'Serengeti II- Dynamics, Management, and Conservation of an Ecosystem', edited by A.R.E. Sinclair and Peter Arcese, published 1995. Each chapter in this book is a research paper from the scientists who have studied the Serengeti ecosystem. This book updates the research that was originally published in the 1979 book plus provides the results of new analysis performed in the interim. 'Cooperation Among Animals: An Evolutionary Perspective (Oxford Series in Ecology and Evolution ', written by A.L. Dugatkin, published in 1997. This book reviews hundreds of examples of cooperation shown by insects, fish, birds and mammals in attempt to understand why animals cooperate. Dugatkin examines the history surrounding the study of cooperation, and proceeds to examine conceptual, theoretical and empirical work on this fascinating subject. 'If a Lion Could Talk : Animal Intelligence and the Evolution of Consciousness', written by Stephen Budiansky, published in 1998.
